[Day 48]
2 Kings 6.17
Then Elisha prayed, “Lord, please open his eyes and let him see.” So the Lord opened the servant’s eyes. He looked and saw that the mountain was covered with horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha
Sometimes watching or listening to the news can be pretty depressing – murders, war, a flourishing illegal drugs trade, political spin and deceit – I could go on!
As Christians, we can look around the nation and see that we are surrounded by evil, and at times it seems that sin has got the upper hand. Sometimes it’s easy to panic and feel like we’re fighting a losing battle.
If, as I said a few days ago, there was a Prophet Top Trumps, Elijah would do pretty well – but Elisha would give him a good run for his money. This man has incredible spiritual insight. He can see and hear things that no one else is able to. When his servant sees an Aramean army surrounding them, Elisha sees that “those who are with us outnumber those who are with them.” He sees the actual reality behind physical reality.
Now that he can see the actual reality, what’s really going on in the spiritual realm, Elisha then directs what should happen. He asks God to strike the Arameans blind, and they become blind. He then leads them straight into their enemy’s city, Samaria. But he doesn’t kill them, he spares them and tells the King of Israel to give them a feast with plenty to eat and drink.
How do we do with spiritual insight? Can we see and hear in the spiritual realm and really see the actual reality, what’s really happening behind the latest depressing news? And when we can see that reality, are we willing to direct what should happen through our prayers and words? Are we willing to lead the very people who lead campaigns against Christianity towards their enemy, Jesus Christ himself, and once there, to ask our King Jesus to give them a feast with plenty to eat and drink? We can be sure of one thing, once they have tasted the bread of life and drunk from the water of life, their lives will never be the same again.
What is God saying?
I believe that God is saying:
Cover in prayer – the worship day; the outreach on the streets. Pray that people will encounter God himself and that their lives will be transformed for ever
